Wax Removal via Microsuction

£75 for one or both ears

If you have booked in for wax removal via Microsuction, this procedure uses a gentle, medical‑grade suction device to remove wax with precision, used by many ENT doctors. Unlike syringing or irrigation, it does not introduce water into the ear, thus reducing the risk of infection.

I use magnification throughout the procedure, therefore I can see every detail inside the ear canal.

This allows for:

  • Accurate removal of wax

  • Minimal risk of trauma

  • A clean, dry, and safe procedure

My background in ENT and hospital audiology means I’m trained to recognise any abnormalities and advise you appropriately if further medical attention is needed.

To ensure your wax removal appointment is safe and effective, it’s important that you follow the Earol preparation guidance:

2 sprays in each ear, twice a day, for 7 days prior to your appointment.

If Earol has been used as required, then the wax in your ear(s) can be removed with ease and comfort successfully in most instances, depending on how impacted the wax is. 

If Earol has not been used as required then it may not be possible to remove the wax in your ear(s) in one appointment, therefore the appointment will be charged at £75. If a second attempt is needed, this will also be charged at £75.

If further attempts are required, I will discuss the best next steps with you. In some cases, an onward referral from me to ENT may be the most appropriate option.

What to expect at your appointment

A Warm Welcome and Clinical History

Your appointment will begin with a brief discussion about your symptoms, medical history and any previous ear conditions. This helps me choose the safest and most appropriate approach for your needs, whether you’re here for microsuction, an ear health check or a custom earplug consultation. Your appointment is designed to be calm, comfortable and empowering, giving you complete clarity about your ear health.

A Thorough Examination of the Ear

Using a high‑definition otoscope, I’ll carefully examine your ear canal and eardrum, checking for wax, infection or anything that might affect treatment. You can see the images on screen if you’d like, most people find this both fascinating and reassuring. I’ll also take a clear video‑otoscopy image of your ear canal and eardrum (if visible). Every procedure aligns with current National Clinical Guidelines.

Post‑Procedure Check and Advice

Once the procedure has been completed, I will re‑examine the ear to ensure everything looks healthy. You’ll receive personalised aftercare advice, including tips on preventing future build‑ups and maintaining good ear health. Another image of your ear canal and eardrum will be taken after the procedure is complete. I will provide you with a report, that can be emailed to you directly, which will include the images and personalised aftercare advice.

What is microsuction?

Microsuction is a safe, dry method of removing ear wax using a gentle medical suction device under magnification.

Is microsuction painful?

Most people find it comfortable. You may hear suction sounds and feel a light pulling sensation, but it shouldn’t hurt.

Is microsuction safe for everyone?

Yes — it’s suitable for most people, however people who may have a history of perforated eardrums, previous ear surgery, or infections may require ENT doctors to remove their wax. I’ll always check your ears first to ensure it’s appropriate and if necessary write a letter of referral for wax removal to the ENT department.

Do I need to use olive oil beforehand?

Yes, at Ear Eden we recommend using EAROL - medicated olive oil, to soften the wax 2 sprays in each ear, twice a day, for 7 days prior to your appointment.

When I put Earol in, I feel like my hearing gets worse?

This is very normal. As the wax softens, it expands, making the ears feel more blocked. You must continue with the Earol UNLESS you experience any pain, in which case, it is recommended you consult your GP immediately. If you do not use Earol to soften the wax, during removal the wax coming away from the skin can cause a tear. Therefore it is important to use Earol as instructed prior to the appointment, to ensure your experience is comfortable and successful.

I am not using Earol, is this ok?

Earol is the best product to use, as this has been proven to disperse the oil more effectively, softening the wax for comfortable and successful wax removal. If you are using another product, it is recommended you immediately cease this, and continue with Earol. Other products can have a more drying effect, which would impact the removal of your wax, if it can be attempted at all. This will be assessed at your appointment.

How long does microsuction take?

Usually 20 minutes, depending on the amount and consistency of wax.

Will my hearing improve straight away?

If wax was causing blockage, most people notice an immediate improvement. If symptoms were due to another cause, I’ll advise you on next steps.

Can I bring someone with me?

Absolutely. Many clients feel more comfortable with a friend or family member present.

Is there anything I should avoid before my appointment?

Avoid inserting cotton buds, ear candles, or any objects into your ears.

What if you find something abnormal?

If I see anything that requires medical attention, I’ll explain it clearly and advise you on the most appropriate next steps, including GP or ENT referral if needed.
